“Open Art Theatre”

is a theatre with it’s own complete repertoire, specialty of which is development and socialization of talented people with Down’s Syndrome and other genetic problems.

Theatre was founded in the year 2001st. Since that time the Theatre raised two generations of artists, which are now in the main troop. In our repertoire there are following plays: “Circus, circus!”, ‘Carmen”, “Romeo and Juliette”, “Cinderella”, “We’re in Jazz!” and the new play “Columbina”. Like in a regular theatre, our artists work on a few plays in the same time.

In fact, the Theatre had become a place of a regular job for the disabled persons, giving them a social life which is close to other people’s lives. “Open Art” is not only an opportunity to express themselves, but a school which helps to employ people with the same diagnosis in future. “Special” actors attend classes of scene and circus art, choreography, vocal and music, useful art for four times a week. They actively take part in cultural events of the Moscow city and districts.

OUR GOAL

Is to give the “special” artists an ability to live and attend the theatre classes – it’s an ability to live a full life, as other people do, when they go to work, enjoy their professions and feel themselves happy.

We help talented children and adults with mental disabilities to open their talents with the help of theatre and music arts and provide their socialization and integration in the society, where they should feel themselves fully functioning, required and confident. Our society will become better and more happy, when it’s no longer indifferent and cruel

OUR TASK

is to help to OPEN their talents and to shine at the stage, open them for the society, which didn’t want to notice them for a long time. Meeting the creation of our actors will help to CHANGE the perception of people with extra chromosome by the society.

WHAT WE DO

We CREATE unique plays in a “special theatre” genre with a minimum of words, lots of plastics and movements, rhythms and lights in an absolutely honest performance – they live at the stage more than they play.

To GIVE the “special” artists an ability to live and attend the theatre classes – it’s an ability to live a full life, as other people do, when they go to work, enjoy their professions and feel themselves happy.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT?

“Open art” is the art, open for everybody. We are open for the society and we want the society to be open for us. Even if now the society knows more about the Down’s Syndrome, than about other genetic disabilities, there are still so many myths and wrong stereotypes about people with Down’s Syndrome! It’s hard to change the perception, but it’s possible with the help of mutual sociability and meeting the creative skills of the special people
